Unisinos University in the National Week of Science, Technology and Innovation 2020

Unisinos University is going to participate in the 17th National Week of Science, Technology and Innovation 2020. From October 19th to 23th, the University will hold a series of online workshops. The lives transmissions will count with professors and researchers from Unisinos, as well as entrepreneurs from Tecnosinos/Unitec. The goal is to share knowledge of Science, Technology, and Innovation – ST&I- produced within Unisinos. The activities carried out by the University will address this year’s theme of the Week, which is “Artificial Intelligence: The New Frontier of Brazilian Science!”, in addition to other technologies, such as Photonics.

“The idea is to reinforce the role of Unisinos in popularizing ST&I, besides the importance of artificial intelligence in people’s lives, its implications for everyday life, for established businesses and new ventures”, explains the Research, Development and Innovation manager from the Academic Research and Graduate Unit, Silvio Bitencourt.

The event takes place in October, marking the National Month of Science, Technology, and Innovations. Unisinos’ participation is part of a project approved by CNPq. Check the schedule of free activities and sign up by clicking here.

ST&I at Unisinos University

Unisinos maintains and develops strategic partnerships with several institutions in more than 30 countries. The University has more than 480 projects, led by more than 340 researchers. One of these searches developed within Unisinos puts artificial intelligence at the service of education. PAT2Math (Personal Affective Tutor) is an intelligent tutor that was developed in the Graduate Program in Applied Computing at Unisinos by professor Patrícia Jaques, with the collaboration of several students, and that uses artificial intelligence techniques to assist elementary school students in algebra learning. The tutor is able to identify emotions and determine the time to intercede and decide the best action to maintain and/or increase student engagement in the activity developed.

Using current methods and new technologies, Unisinos is attentive to the contemporary world and its transformations without, however, forgetting the original values. Strengthened in its Science, Technology, and Innovation (ST&I) ecosystem, Unisinos explores the frontiers of technoscience to build the society of tomorrow. To align academic excellence with research, innovation, and technology, it counts with:

Technological Institutes:

The University has 5 Institutes – itt Chip, itt Fossil, itt Fuse, itt Nutrifor, and itt Performance – prepared to provide technical services and support for companies and organizations in research activities. With high-tech equipment, Technological Institutes are supported by NITT Unisinos – Innovation and Technology Transfer Center. Innovation Portal

A living lab that allows the connection between University, companies, government, and society for the collaborative development of concrete and viable projects, the Innovation Portal connects Unisinos to the market and transforms research and technology into innovation.

Tecnosinos

Unisinos has a reference technological park, Tecnosinos. Created more than 20 years ago, it symbolizes the continuous effort of the partnership between University, private initiative, and public power – which, together, form the triple helix governance model. The Park houses companies in the areas of Information Technology, Semiconductors, Automation and Engineering, Communication and Digital Convergence, Health Technologies and Renewable Energies, and Social and Environmental Technologies. It currently has 60 consolidated companies and 40 startups, creating about 7,400 jobs. At Tecnosinos, global companies join dozens of incubated and graduated startups at the Innovation and Technology Unit – Unitec, Tecnosinos’ incubator, generating innovation that drives the economy.

With the objective of fostering the development of startups throughout Rio Grande do Sul, Unitec launched on Thursday, October 8, the + Startups Program: Unitec Network of Local Incubators. The new hybrid incubation modality is aimed at external agents such as, for example, city halls, and sectoral hubs, who are interested in leveraging regional or local development through the emergence and maturation of new technology-based companies.

Unitec has level 2 certification from the Reference Center for Support to New Enterprises (Cerne) and gathers a set of processes necessary for the systematic generation of innovative enterprises and uses all systems (implemented by the key processes) for management focused on results. It includes access to mentoring, training, planning and monitoring, access to funds, among other mechanisms.

In 2019, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of HT Micron, a company located at Tecnosinos and dedicated to providing local semiconductor solutions, a new IoT technology was launched, developed in collaboration with itt Chip. This technology, called SIP, is unprecedented in Brazil, making Unisinos a reference in research in the area. Due to the high level of technological qualification achieved through the partnership between HT Micron and Unisinos, it is possible to develop SIP technologies with high added value to the products. This change strengthens the semiconductor industry with a focus on IoT, enabling the product line to be a vector for regional development and stimulating the state’s economy.
